Tandem axle trailers are less popular in the UK than their three-axled counterparts. This is because a two axle trailer can not carry as much weight as one with the extra axle. This means that they are typically used on lower weight applications and often can be seen towed by a smaller ‘urban artic’ for inner city operation. The maximum weight a tandem axle trailer could be would be part of a gross train weight of 40 tonne – but hat would require the use of a 6×2 tractor unit. In reality these two axle (tandem) trailers are pulled by a 4×2 tractor unit with a much lower combined vehicle weight. For smaller trailers (perhaps the car & van variety), a trailer with two axles may also be described as a twin axle trailer.
